Buying A Portable or Window Air Conditioner - Read This First to Get the Right Size!

Welcome Summer! The time of year when kids play outside, BBQs is what's for dinner, the beach calls you, the evenings are longer ... and the fire of what feels like a thousand suns and so much humidity that you can almost eat the thick air!

Luckily, 3Gorillas.com has a HUGE selection of air conditioners to meet any budget. But to someone like me, who knows about this much () about air conditioners, the selection can be overwhelming.

WAIT - WE CAN HELP!!

You need to determine the BTU you need. The what?! BTU - British Thermal Unit and is a unit of measurement for energy. Yes, I pulled that right off of Wikipedia, and have no idea what it means, but you need to pay attention to it when ordering an air conditioner.

Here is your quick cheat sheet for what BTU you need based on the square footage of the room you want to cool:

Square Footage / BTU Required

100 up to 150 --5,000
150 up to 250 -- 6,000
250 up to 300 -- 7,000
300 up to 350 -- 8,000
350 up to 400 -- 9,000
400 up to 450 -- 10,000
450 up to 550 -- 12,000
550 up to 700  --14,000
700 up to 1,000 -- 18,000
1,000 up to 1,200 --21,000
1,200 up to 1,400 -- 23,000
1,400 up to 1,500 -- 24,000
1,500 up to 2,000 --30,000
2,000 up to 2,500 --34,000

FINE PRINT: Many things can affect the performance of an air conditioner. If you are in Florida, get a bigger AC than you think you need. If the room you want to cool is already shaded, you can squeak by with a smaller unit.

We get calls everyday from customers who are upset because their new air conditioner doesn't work. Literally, 100% of the time it is because they ordered a unit much to small for their room. So save yourself (and us!) the hassle of doing a return and loosing shipping costs, and use this chart to determine the best AC to fit your needs. Then buy one HERE!

Happy Summer!
